We are looking at the inside of the cockpit, where the stanchion holds up the cockpit base.
With the cloth pulled tight, push a sharp finishing nail through right at the corner. be prepared to push surprisingly hard.
Here the cloth has slackened off a bit, and it looks like the nail is not right in the corner. At this point the cloth is already glued to the gunwale on the outside.
